The Return of the Weird After Some Years
Some years ago, I had a short video series posted to YouTube called Doug Talks Weird. It was a play on words both about how I tend to ramble on about weird topics in a weird way and that I liked to talk about weird fiction. I had something like four episodes written, recorded maybe three of those, and then put it on a brief hiatus that turned into a decade. Why? A little bit was just not being quite sure how to present them while being a bit self-conscious about all their faults. Partially I just also needed something that could grow fairly organically and I started with absolute whoppers of videos: around 30 minutes. Without a proper set-up to make editing/writing/presenting easier. I had some ideas for shorter videos. Videos that were a bit more planned out. All came to nothing.
After that, I kept up my long-winded essays about weird fiction over on Goodreads but in the past year or so I have largely withdrawn from all social media and GR is essentially on the chopping block. I have no precise interest in deleting my account but I think it will wind down. Besides, the structure of Goodreads is that you write reviews for specific books and while that works sometimes, there are times where I want to talk about an author, something not-exactly-bookish (stuff like weird/horror movies or themes across books and movies), or otherwise just post a broad thought or ramble.
Now that Doug Alone (my solo play blog) has been around for a most of a year, I thought it might be nice to expand upon my blog-family a bit and add a second one.
What are the plans for this new version of Doug Talks Weird? Time will tell. The general plan is to bring book reviews (both new ones to this blog and rewrites/updates from those I initially posted to Goodreads) and then blend in that other content as it comes to me. Short horror films. Strange games. Odd roleplaying stuff. The intersection of weird fiction, horror fiction, particular types of science fiction, some urban fantasy, mystery, and the broad type of odd fiction that I like. A few more literary types when the vibe encroaches upon the way the outside and inside clash. It'll all make sense.
No particular post schedule or anything. Just vibes.
